What is a 24 hour answering service?
A service that answers your business phone in your name at any hour: during the day when every line is busy, in the evening, overnight, on weekends and on holidays. It is sometimes called a 24/7 answering service, a 24 hour telephone answering service or a 24 hour virtual receptionist; the names mean the same thing. The people or software answering work from your instructions, so the caller hears your business name and gets the next step you chose. How does a 24 hour answering service work?
Your calls reach the service, the service answers in your name, and you get the result. In practice, you either forward your business line to a number the service gives you, all the time or only when you do not pick up, or you move your number to the service; Smith.ai's pricing page, for example, offers to "port your business number at no charge." You write the instructions: what to say, which questions to ask, which calls to transfer and to whom, and which to book onto your calendar. After each call you get a message, a transcript or a booking, and anything urgent reaches the person your rule names.

How much does a 24 hour answering service cost?
About $159 to $415 a month for 40 calls on the live plans above, and about $384 to $1,725 for 100 calls, because most live plans are priced by the minute or by the call rather than by the hour of day. AI plans cost about $45 to $109 for 40 calls, and some add a setup fee: AgentZap charges $499 once. Two details move the bill more than the hour of the call: how a service rounds each call's length, and whether booking an appointment costs extra (Smith.ai's live service charges $1.50 per booking).
